I am planning to do an advocacy project on everyday consumption signals. Basically I will be looking at everyday singals that urge us to consume. Why they do this and how the signals are effecting people and the world. The comunication aspect is the signals that we recieve that make us comsume. I will be looking at ads, labels, enviroments were these signals are consumed. In an effort to reduce consumption I will try and get HFS to stop buying large fountain drink cups. I plan to do this using my internship and washprig to help sway HFS into adopting this policy.

I think this is a great start to an advocacy project. Being that we see hundreds/thousands of advertisements a day, there is certainly a vast array of signals you can examine. As for the fountain cup idea, I remember you mentioning it in class, but I can't remember what HFS is. Are they selling drinks for profit? Have you come up with a reasonable business-angle defense against purchasing large fountain drink cups? I admire your idea but I'm not sure if a business will want to give up selling their most expensive drink size if they're trying to make profit. Either way, it would be a great achievement if you were able to make a difference like that!
Hi Blaise,
Your approach to the final project is an interesting one. I admire how you are planning to take action and participate in the public realm by trying to effect change at HFS. I think that writing about your experiences in this situation will be a good counterpoint to your research on consumption signals.
I would like to see you expand on your idea of encouraging people to consume more by offering larger sizes at food service facilities. You will follow in the tradition of "Super Size Me"; remember how McDonald's stopped 'Supersize' promotions following the movie's success?
On the other hand, this project could encompass a lot of complicated ideas and concepts. Hopefully you won't have to scale down your scope too much; I hope your plans with HFS will provide focus for your writing.

HFS stands for Housing and Food services. they are in charge of all the food services here at UW. They buy their product from Coca Cola. The hard sell will be to get HFS to get coke to let them get rid of the large cup. If HFS reduces its consumption that means Coke loses money.
